Libraries in Wiltshire are bursting with events this May as the National Year of Reading gets into its stride.

The Wiltshire County Council-run libraries are organising a range of events throughout the next eight months under the banner 'Love Reading, Love Libraries'.

Among the events taking place in May are:

Bradford on Avon

  • On Wednesday May 14 at 7.30pm people can join local award winning science writer Piers Bizony for an up-to-the minute tour of the space tourism scene. Piers will also be signing copies of his latest book How to Build Your Own Spaceship. The event is free. To book a place please contact Bradford library on 01225 863280.
  • On Wednesday May 28 at 6pm people can come and meet award-winning crime writer Malcolm Rose who will be talking about his very successful teenage crime series, Traces, and explore the fascinating world of forensic science. Salisbury

  • On Wednesday May 28 at 2pm award-winning crime writer Malcolm Rose will be talking about his very successful teenage crime series, Traces, and exploring the fascinating world of forensic science. The event is free.

Trowbridge

  • Start Surfing the Net is an introduction to the internet for complete beginners at Trowbridge library on Thursday May 22. The session is being run twice: once from 11am to noon, and again between 3pm and 4pm. It is free of charge to anyone wanting to attend, but it is essential to book a place as numbers are limited. Contact the library on 01225 761171 to book. This event is especially aimed at older people.

Warminster

  • Debby Holt, author of The Ex-Wife's Survival Guide, Annie May's Black Book and The Trouble with Marriage, will be visiting Warminster library on Thursday May 22, at 7pm. Debby, who specialises in witty explorations of relationships between men and women, will be talking about her writing life and taking questions. Admission is by free ticket available at the library and includes refreshments.
  • Warminster library has also organised a competition in conjunction with the Wiltshire Times where eight to 11-year-olds can win the chance to have their very own front page created by newspaper.
  • Children are invited to create their own Wiltshire Times front page set any time in either the past or future. Entrants can design the layout and write the stories and the headlines. The front page can be created on the computer or with pens, pencils and paper. The front page images can be staged photographs or pictures drawn by the children.
  • The closing date is July 14. Entries can be handed in to any Wiltshire library and entrants, who have to come from the Wiltshire Times circulation area, must write their name, date of birth, school and contact details on the back of their entry.

  • The library hosts a presentation from Andy Derry about the Wiltshire Blind Association on Tuesday May 13 from 2pm to 2.45pm.

Andy will be happy to answer any questions relating to visual impairment and how the association can help. The event is free of charge but please book in advance as places are limited. Ring 01793 853249.

  • Alongside these events there will also be a range of other activities for people to enjoy at their local library. Many libraries will also be running a range of regular activities such as sessions for babies and toddlers, and children's storytimes book clubs. Amesbury

  • From May 6-15 there will be a display about the Love Food Hate Waste campaign which aims to reduce the amount of food people throw away. A recycling advisor will be at the library on the morning of Tuesday May 6 to answer questions from visitors and explain more about the campaign. The event is free and no booking is required.

Bradford on Avon

  • On Thursday May 22 there will be Internet for Beginners a free introductory session running from 2.30pm to 3.30pm and 3.45pm to 4.45pm. To book a place, please contact the library on 01225 863280.
  • On Friday May 23 at 6.30pm there will be Herbal Medicine and Women's Health - a free question and answer session with local practitioners, Iria Kreutz-Schiller MURHP and Vicki Pitman MURHP.

Salisbury

  • On Thursday May 29, Salisbury library will be hosting the eighth "MiniStreet" event - and this year, Salisbury's young teenagers will have the opportunity to show off their talents.
  • As part of the annual event, the library will be running "MiniStreet's Got Talent" - a talent show open to young people aged 11 - 15 living in the Salisbury area. There are limited spaces and those interested must fill out an application form for a chance to audition.

Westbury

  • There will be a story and rhyme time session suitable for under fives and parents/carers in the foyer of the recently opened Westbury Children's Centre on Wednesday May 7 at 10.30am. This is a free event with no booking necessary.
  • The Westbury Readers Group will be launching its new reading programme on May 12 at 7.30pm with a discussion focussing on the biographies of Audrey Hepburn. Programmes are available from the library and new members to the reading group are always welcome. This is a free event and no booking is necessary.
  • The library will host an information display about the Love Food Hate Waste campaign from May 19 to 31. The campaign encourages people to reduce the amount of food waste they throw away. A recycling advisor will be on hand in the morning of May 19 to answer people's questions. The event is free and no booking is. This is the library's main event to celebrate Adult Learners Week.
  • Also the library is running a special rhyme time for three year olds and under and their carers/parents as an opportunity to introduce them to some new songs and rhymes. The event is on Monday May 19 from 11.30am to noon. It is free and no booking is necessary.
  • On Wednesday May 21 the local post-natal group of mums and new babies will be visiting the library for hints and tips on the joys and benefits of using books with young children.
