"More needs to be done" to tackle the problems on Devizes's roads.

That's according to Iain Wallis, a Devizes Town Councillor.

It comes after a series of incidents on the A361 through the town, including an "incredibly dangerous and careless" attempt by one driver to carry out an 11-car overtake.

Roads Policing Unit Sergeant Will Ayres said: “It is staggering to think that this driver thought it wise or necessary to overtake so many vehicles.

“It was an incredibly dangerous and careless manoeuvre, and it is very fortunate that it didn’t result in a collision.

“Driving at excess speed can have serious consequences, and drivers must exercise great care and caution if overtaking and be mindful of road safety at all times.”

A man in his 50s from Swindon was issued a ticket in relation to the incident on August 10.

A crash also took place on the road in the centre of Devizes on August 10, causing Gains Lane to be closed in both directions.

An ambulance was called to the scene, with warnings given that delays would also be expected.

Earlier this year, a man in his 80s was killed in a crash with a lorry on the A361 on July 17.

The pensioner suffered fatal injuries after the smash between Beckhampton and Devizes and died at the scene.

Councillor Iain Wallis told the Gazette and Herald: “Having grown up in Devizes I am aware of many accidents along the A361 particularly at Caen Hill and the Bishops Cannings crossroads, some of which have been fatal.

“Wiltshire Council has put £300,000 in to this year's highways budget to investigate a redesign of Caen Hill to make this road safer but it is likely that more work is also needed at the other end of town as well as resurfacing.

“Ultimately we need drivers to respect the rules of the road and take fewer chances.

“A 20mph zone will soon be in place for the majority of the town centre but we already have many complaints of speeding drivers, particularly at night, along Bath Road, Station Road, and London Road so as well as new speed limits we also need people to follow them."

The issues around the A361 are not the only challenges that drivers in the town have had to face.
