A DEVIZES resident has described the moment she heard a horrific crash from her living room.

Maggie, who lives on Station Road, heard the crash take place last month, and said she heard screams coming from the road that were louder than her television.

Maggie said: “It was awful - I could hear screams coming from outside that were louder than the TV.

“I picked up the phone and told the police to get here.

“They said they were dealing with lots of other things that night, but I said it was urgent [and that they should] come now.”

The victim, a man in his 30s, was taken to Southmead hospital with serious injuries.

The issue has been an ongoing cause of concern for people in the area, she noted.

More of the recent problems have involved youths ‘racing’ their cars around the area according to the police.

The resident added: “There needs to be more for them to do in the area so they can be constructive with their time.

“Once they’re told not to, it makes them want to do it more- and it’s not been nice for people living here.”

Since the incident, officers attended an address in Devizes and arrested a 20-year-old man, a 21-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy, all on suspicion of attempted murder.

They also arrested a 40-year-old woman on suspicion of assisting an offender.

The 15-year-old boy has been charged with two counts of common assault on an emergency worker, in connection with the incident.

The teenager was released on bail and will face Salisbury Magistrates Court on August 23, and 20-year-old Jake Jamie Johnson-Atcherley, 20, of Hambleton Avenue, Devizes has been charged with S18 Grievous Bodily Harm and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The incident also came after Wiltshire Police visited the car park 28 times in June due to ‘anti-social motorists.’

Some of the problems highlighted have included noise problems, risk to residents through dangerous driving, concerns about drug use, verbal abuse of residents, vandalism and more.

The car park has now been closed temporarily according to the Conservative MP for Devizes, Danny Kruger.

He said: “The issues in the Station Road area stem mainly from groups using the long-stay car park to congregate.

“I’m very sympathetic to residents’ anger and for their calls for more permanent solutions."
