ARSONISTS are suspected of starting a fire that damaged a barn and several tonnes of hay bales off the B4040 between Acton Turville and Luckington yesterday evening.

Crews from Malmesbury, Chippenham, Calne, Corsham and Tetbury, plus water carriers from Pewsey and Royal Wootton Bassett, attended the blaze at Hebden Farm, Luckington, which started at around 7.40pm.

The Corsham crew is still in attendance this morning. The barn measured 10 metres by 30 metres and was "fully involved".

Wiltshire Police are understood to be treating the fire as suspected arson and last night launched an investigation into the incident.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service call out eight appliances involving up to 50 firefighters to battle the fire.

They used drags to tackle the fire and a 45mm jet to help protect an adjacent barn. They are believed to be letting the fire burn itself out over a 24-hour period.

The B4040 was closed while the emergency services dealt with the fire but the road is now open.

Local residents were urged to keep their doors and windows closed to avoid breathing in smoke fumes.
