Customers using petrol stations may have noticed that they are being charged up to £100 for filling up.

Checks are in place at several supermarkets that hold the cash while the transaction goes through.

The charges are in place for people who use the pay-at-pump service.

To use the pay-at-pump service, you must enter your card and PIN before filling up with fuel.

The pre-authorisation check ringfences cash to cover the cost.

This means that customers will not be able to spend money albeit temporarily on products that they may need.

For example, a customer could fill up £50 worth of fuel, however, £100 could be pre-authorised.

The cost-of-living crisis means consumers need as much money as possible in their pockets.

Visa and Mastercard last year increased the holding fee to up to £100 last year.

The charge was previously a low amount of around £1, meaning many never noticed it appearing on their account.

Below are the petrol stations that charge the deposit and the amount.

  • Tesco £99
  • Asda £99
  • Sainsbury’s £100
  • Morrisons £100

BP, Shell and other petrol stations do not use a pre petrol authorisation charge as they do not use the pay-at-pump service.

Customers are advised to pay for petrol at the kiosk in order to avoid the pre petrol authorisation charge.
