A high-flying Army officer with a history of self-harming took his own life after the breakdown of his marriage, an inquest has heard.

An inquest in Salisbury heard that Lieutenant Thomas James Appleby had a history of self-harming at times of issues in his personal relationships.

Lt Appleby, 29, of the 21 Signal Regiment, was discovered dead in his room on July 21 last year two weeks after the breakdown of his marriage.

Fellow officers went to his room at the Officers Mess at Azimghur Barracks in North Colerne when he failed to appear for lunch.

Efforts were made to resuscitate him but shortly afterwards he was confirmed dead by paramedics.

A week before, he had moved out of his marital home at Chippenham to accommodation in the Officers Mess.

Recording a verdict of suicide, Wiltshire and Swindon area coroner Ian Singleton said: “Thomas James Appleby had a history of deliberate self-harming at times of issues in personal relationships.

“On 21 July 2021 some two weeks after the breakdown of his marriage he was found deceased in his quarters at Room 4, Officers Mess, Azimghur Barracks in North Colerne. Notes in the room in his handwriting expressed remorse for his actions.”
