The announcement that NHS workers at the Great Western Hospital are now paying for their parking again prompted fury from a nurse who contacted the Adver to say staff were under valued, underpaid and underprivileged.

They will have to pay £1.50 a day for parking at the site. The trust said it if carried on providing free parking it would not be able to make some investments that were important for patient care and safety.

Readers had mixed views about the move and some questioned why health workers could not use buses or cycle to work.

Here's what they said on social media...

John McCarthy: "With the job they do then get hammered on parking everyday. Hero’s without the footballers wages and then charged to park. Shameful.

Nathalie Marshall: "Every NHS worker who drives to work will have to pay for parking. Pay the staff properly, then leave the choice of travel methods to the staff."

Tony Robson: "Nathalie Marshall for a lot of people there isn't any choice. The bus service is pretty woeful even during daylight hours.

"Consider the night and weekend workers coming on shift at seven pm or trying to get home from 6am onwards.

"Then think about the available service on a Sunday, people's other responsibilities and commitments to partners, children and elderly relatives. Using a bus or an expensive taxi is a practical option for a small minority, regardless of their abysmal pay."

Neil Houghton: "Please tell me the difference between me having to pay if I want to take my car to work and people who work at hospitals ? I know they are dr and nurses etc."

Carol Hall: "Do you start work at 7 and finish around 10? Do you realise the appalling wages some care staff receive?

"A band 3 care assistant /emergency care assistant only earn around £20,000 . These are highly experienced staff who are the backbone of the nhs.

"I know of lots of staff who are struggling and have no choice but to drive to work because of shifts."

Kath Danswan: "No wonder the NHS draining staff. They should have free parking."

Doreen Dunning: "They should have free parking I think it's disgusting they have to pay they are under valued."

Patrick Connolly: "I would say it should be a lot more, people need to stop using cars, as a health service provider they have a duty to set a good example, cycling or walking would be healthier and cheaper, the hospital has a great secure cycle store, shower area etc on the right as you enter the hospital site."

Christine Ings: "Patrick Connolly Time involved here, nothing ever black and white. Staff cycling home late at night! no way.

"Swindon is massive, cycle 10miles then treat a patient don't think so. I know where your coming from but not practical gone are the days when Swindon had lots of localised hospitals."

Janette Dunne: "Patrick Connolly try telling staff that work there out of the Swindon area and finish in the early hours of the morning."

Teresa Martin: "All staff should be treated equally. Staff that can not afford to have a car have no option other than to pay bus fares, should they be given a free bus pass?

"It's relatively cheaper to park a car than travel by bus."

Laura Jayne Lowry: "I have a family member who is a nurse (not yet qualified so not the highest paid) and she doesn't mind, she's grateful it has been free for so long."

Adam Poole: "The bottom line here is that if the Government funded the NHS properly NHS trusts such as GWH would not need to charge their own staff to park."
