A local community shop is selling all their clothes for £1 per item to help with the cost of living crisis.

The community shop on Somerville Road in Walcot has decided to sell its clothing as cheap as possible to help people struggling with the increasing cost of living.

One of the shop volunteers, Peter Mallinson, has volunteered at the shop for the past 15 years and is doing everything he can to help people in need in Swindon.

"Even though we're called Walcot Community Shop, we're here to help anyone who needs it.

"We're here to help anyone who is in need of help, not the ones who just want it."

Because of this, everything in the store is priced as cheap as possible.

Swindon Advertiser:

Not only are the clothes priced at £1 per item, but furniture varies in prices between around £15 and £80.

"What's the point in taking more money if we're giving it back?" Peter said.

Swindon Advertiser:

The reason they are able to price things so cheap is that the charity is run by volunteers, and the only fees taken out of the profit are for rent and bills for the location as well as travel fees for the volunteers.

The problem, Peter finds, is finding ways to give back to the community.

"We need help in finding people to help.

"We're not here to solve problems, but to help reduce the stress of the problem."

Some of the previous ways the shop has helped out are by donating money to the local schools, giving money back to a pensioner who was robbed right outside the shop

Peter told the Adver: "There was a mum who came into the shop a few years ago who was in need of school shoes for her children, so we helped her.

"We've also helped another woman to put petrol in her car to go visit her dying husband in Oxford."

Swindon Advertiser:

The store is now urging people who might struggle with the increasing cost of living crisis to come to the store to buy winter coats and clothes to help keep them warm during the upcoming winter months.

They are selling their coats for £1 each, just like the rest of their clothing. If you're there on the right day, you might also find some other treasures.

"We had a man come in a couple of weeks ago who bought three suits for £3, so that's £1 per suit.

"A woman also came in and bought three padded winter coats for £3 in total."
