EIGHT pupils from Sheldon School in Chippenham are to compete at the South West Regional Track & Field Championships in Exeter on Saturday (June 18).

The school took more than 25 Sheldon young athletes to compete in the Wiltshire County Athletics Championships in Swindon.

Holly Wainwright, Head of PE at Sheldon School, said: “To qualify for this, pupils had to have won the area trials in their event against ten local schools. It was a fantastic achievement to even qualify.

“There were some phenomenal Sheldon performances, and the following athletes won their respective events and are now through to the South West Regional Championships next Saturday in Exeter. This event is also the qualifiers for the English Schools National finals.

“Joe (100m and 200m), Jemima (Javelin), Harry (3000m), Owen (Hammer), James (Hammer), Adam (Hammer), Peter (High Jump), Poppy (High Jump).

“Poppy jumped the same height as the winner but unfortunately will miss going to South West Championships due the count back on her jumps.

“The following students in Year 7 also performed brilliantly but Y7s don't compete at the South West: Layla (Long Jump and 800m) and Kieran (Javelin).

"The achievements of these students are absolutely remarkable, and they are without doubt some of the strongest athletes in the county.”
