A Wiltshire performer Nick Harper is soon to perform his new album live in Marlborough Town Hall.

His new album, Phantastes features songs based on his narrative within the town, with the show set to take place on 22 June.

The story of the songs leads up to the first time he kissed his wife on June 22nd 1982, round the back of the Town Hall in St. Mary’s churchyard.

Harper will come full circle, as he is set to share his songs just 30 yards away from the same spot four decades later.

The musician has been reflecting on his time in the industry so far and revealed how he views the process of making music to this newspaper.

He said: “I think it’s the same for everyone.

“You’re kind of bearing your soul, and there are some people who love it and get out there because they think the world needs to see them perform, but I think most musicians get affected by the connection to the fundamentals of the universe, and the heightened emotions inside the music.

“Its unique language can help you on your journey, and I think that’s what draws most people in to learn an instrument, it’s to express yourself.

“Although I’m lucky enough to make a living out of it, it’s still the music underneath it all that is the reward that is the goal.”

Described by The Times as having “so much musicianship in him that it just leaks out all over the place”, Harper has made an impression on many, but surprisingly, he never planned on being a singer.

Harper fell into his career after simply playing music with friends when he was younger by joining a band in school.

Originally, he thought that they were just looking for a guitarist but also ended up becoming their singer, which was not his intention.

Now, much of Harper’s work is orientated around authenticity, and he has no plans to give it all up any time soon.

He said: “I think everyone has their truth, I can’t write about things that I don’t feel.

“I write from experience, from people I know from the way I feel about the world.

“I have to believe and know what I’m singing about to make it real for myself, and just hope that it resonates with other people, and along the way I’ve done ok I think.”
