Although train fare evasion is relatively uncommon in Wiltshire, there have still been a couple of passengers caught out by the rules recently.

A 23-year-old woman from Bracknell was fined a total of £545.80 after travelling from Westbury.

According to Swindon Magistrates’ Court; Gursevak Ajay Singh Dhanda ‘paid her fare for a journey between an unspecified location and another unspecified location and knowingly and wilfully proceeded by train beyond the distance paid for and without previously paying the additional fare for the additional distance and with intent to avoid payment thereof.’ A 25-year-old woman from Bristol has also been accused of trying to dodge the fare.

Catalin Alexandru Ioja also allegedly paid her fare for a journey between an unspecified location and another unspecified location, and then exceeded the distance without paying the additional fare according to Swindon Magistrates’ Court.

Caitlin is due to face court on 10 June this year.

Fare evasion or fare dodging is the act of travelling on public transport without paying by deliberately not purchasing a required ticket to travel (having had the chance to do so).

Section 5(3) of the 1889 Act provides outlines that if any person travels, or attempts to travel on a train with intent to avoid payment, they are committing an offence.
