The opportunity to live near to TV star Bear Grylls, become known as a 'Dabchick' and own a large six-bedroom home has arisen at Aldbourne, near Marlborough.

It could be yours for a guide price of £1,700,000.

The village has two pubs and quite a TV association. It was the home of the late BBC Animal Magic presenter Johnny Morris, the location for an episode of Doctor Who and in 2018 Vodafone filmed its Christmas ad there.

Bear Grylls, the adventurer famed for his survival TV series, lives in the nearby area.

Savills is conducting the sale of Chalice Lodge, which has come on the market after a recent refurbishment. The estate agent says the renovation has resulted in the creation of “an outstanding family home ideally suited to a modern lifestyle”.

Aldbourne residents are known as Dabchicks. According to legend a strange bird once appeared in the village pond. An old man of the village was asked to identify it. He claimed it was “a dabchick” [it was a little grebe].

Ramsbury residents mocked this, causing fights by nicknaming young men of Aldbourne ‘dabchicks’, but the name stuck. Now there is a Dabchick brass band, the Dabchick golf society and the Dabchick village magazine.
