The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning that Storm Barra is expected to give Wiltshire a battering throughout today (December 7).
Forecasters say there could be power cuts if the expected gale brings down lines.
Weathermen have alerted the public to expect high winds to also cause road and rail disruption.
Drivers of high-sided vehicles have been warned to take special care on exposed routes and when driving on bridges.
The Met Office is also warning that there could be tree damage as the high winds, ranging from 44mph to 70mph, cut across the country.
The yellow weather warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office for most of the UK, including Wiltshire.
This alert is in place until midnight, with the weather service warning that "high winds are expected to affect much of the UK, causing travel disruption in some areas".
A weather warning of heavy snow is in place across northern England and Scotland.
