Cash-less shoppers will be relieved to hear that they can return to Aldi in Malmesbury.

The store says the technology problem that left it unable to accept card payments has been fixed.

And the announcement will come as a relief to Aldi staff who had to face some frustrated shoppers.

During the past three weeks shoppers at the newly-opened supermarket have frequently been told that they are unable to spend at all unless they had cash in their pocket.

Issues with the signal meant that Aldi’s card machines stopped working, causing some exasperated shoppers to complain to staff and shop elsewhere.

Local community groups on Facebook have been inundated with grumbles from irritated shoppers who have filled trolleys with a weekly shop only to discover when they got to the tills that it was cash only.

One posted: “I’ve been three times and it was all cash only, a lot of people got caught without cash and had to leave shopping behind as they didn’t realise until too late.

“In all fairness, they had small signs outside but they should have someone on the door before you even start as obviously some people missed the signs.”

Another added: “I’ve stopped going to Aldi now as the card machines very rarely work when I do go.

"I won’t carry cash full stop, for the likes of my shopping as that’s a lot of cash to carry around. I’d rather pay the tiny bit extra and go to Co-op or Waitrose.”

But there were calls on social media for people to be more understanding.

One posted: “I have spent the week at Aldi selling poppies.

"The number of people who came back day after day who had had the problem explained to them and still came back next day without cash.”

Another shared the same call for calm in the aisles, saying: “My daughter was on the tills today and has been screamed at repeatedly. We really should be kinder as a community.”

There has been much speculation as to the cause of the problem, with some wondering whether transmitters on top of a nearby water tower were causing interference.

But on Friday Aldi announced that it hoped that the problem had been fixed.

An assistant store manager posted: “Quick update about Aldi card payments. As of today we have been given a new 4G provider which doesn’t use the mast on the water tower.

“Maintenance on this has been the issue, so card payments should be stable now until BT finally come and install our landline.”
