Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club has added a hidden element to its new kit to celebrate its 50-year history.
The idea of establishing a rugby club in Wootton Bassett was put in motion five decades ago by John Forbes-Keith, with the involvement of his sons Ian and Hamish and a number of other men who had been playing rugby for Calne Bentleian RFC.
John instigated a meeting of all those interested, held in the lounge bar of The Curriers Arms pub on December 21 1971.
The names of the 13 who attended the meeting feature on this season’s 1st XV playing shirt. The detail can be found on the golden stripes that run alongside the number on the back of the shirts.
The other founders were Michael Leighfield, Royston Smith, Melvyn Wright, Hamish Keith, Vernon Nation, Tony Trussell, Colin Applegate, David Brown, Ian Campbell, John Baker and Michael Brown.
Last month Ian, Hamish, Mike, Mick, Melvyn and Royston, together with Stuart Nation representing his father Vernon, who died recently, were presented with a commemorative match shirt.
The shirts were presented by current members of the 1st XV.
