The identity of a person who died after hit by a train near the Patney road bridge near Devizes has yet to be confirmed.

The Wiltshire & Swindon coroner’s office has been informed after the person's body was recovered from the rail line near Patney road bridge, Devizes, last Thursday.

A spokeswoman for the coroner's office in Salisbury said they could not yet release the name, age and address of the person involved until an inquest has opened to confirm identity.

The incident disrupted Great Western Railway services between Westbury and Reading.

GWR spokesman Dan Panes said the person was hit near the Patney road bridge between Heywood Road and Woodborough by the 6.05am service from Penzance to London Paddington.

GWR published a statement on its website saying: “Due to a person hit by a train between Reading and Westbury all lines are blocked.

“Train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until 15.00.”

The incident affected GWR services between the South West and London Paddington station.

British Transport Police are investigating the incident, which happened just before just before 11am.
