A SERVICE has been held to commemorate the local impact of the Battle of Britain during the Second Wolrd War.

Hullavington Airdrome was attacked and seven people were killed during the Battle of Britain, on August 14, 1940. Two bombs were also dropped at nearby Glebe Farm in Lower Stanton St Quintin, near Chippenham.

Squadron Leader Jack White and his wife and son John were billeted later at Glebe Farm while Jack was serving at RAF Hullavington. He died in active service in 1953 in the Far East. A plaque at Glebe Farm recalls his stay.

A replica bomb has now been procured by the current occupants of Glebe Farm, Mr and Mrs MJ Robins, and a service has been held to commemorate the events of the Battle of Britain.

Mr and Mrs Kett-White attended the event with Mr Kett-White leading the service.

Representatives of the Malmesbury RAF Association and Buckley Barracks (the successor to RAF Hullavington) also attended.

There was an 'appropriate' fly past, organisers say.
