Stamp of approval for new Bromham Post Office after fire

The Post Office has been uprooted several times over recent years, most recently due to the devastating fire that destroyed the Social Centre.

Now, thanks to a donated clubhouse, the Post Office has been able to re-open for business.

People can pop in to drop off post, buy gift cards or, as was the case when the Gazette visited, to buy second class stamps.

Sue Skelt has long fought to ensure the village's Post Office's survival, and helped organise a 're-launch' day on Wednesday, August 25.

Hot drinks, balloons and cakes greeted the first visitors to the clubhouse.

"It's been really amazing seeing the transformation," she said.

"We're so excited. It really is so important to have a Post Office service right here in the village."

Dennis Powney, who had been waiting outside the Social Centre for a Monday Club session when the fire first took hold, cut the ribbon as Tina May, the village's dedicated post-master, and Rachel Chidgey , area manager for the Post Office, watched on proudly.

Rachel promised a first-class service from within the clubhouse.

She added: "This is a fantastic team effort by the village, Tina, the Parish Council and the Post Office. Tina has been amazing and so dedicated during all this."

Peter Davis explained that plans for a new social centre were coming along quickly. The rubble left from the fire has already been cleared ahead of ambitious plans to build a replacement within the next three years.

Seeing the village post office in a new home was a special moment for the whole community, Peter explained.

Bromham's Sally Price is also taking on a sponsored wing walk to raise funds for the social centre re-build project.

He said: “It's just how Bromham is. It's always been a village that has pulled together, and the social centre was a place that had connected people for years."

Malcolm Turner added: "The fire was devastating after all the work that went into the social centre. But this building is a positive next step."

Opening times for the post office are Monday 1.30pm and 3.30pm and Wednesday 9am - 11am.

Thanks has also been given to Reverend Ruth Schofield, John Drew and the Church for providing temporary accommodation for Tina and the Post Office following the fire.

Previous homes for Bromham's post office include in the building opposite the clubhouse which was run by postmaster David Price, in the village shop and in the social centre.
