CHIPPENHAM MP Michelle Donelan has welcomed plans by the UK Government to offer resettlement to 20,000 refugees from Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover.

Miss Donelan said: “It has been awful to see the images and scenes unfolding in Afghanistan as the Taliban have advanced through to Kabul and I stand in solidarity with those facing immense danger in the region.

“We now have a duty to support the most vulnerable and provide sanctuary to those Afghans forced to flee their country.

“This will take place through a new and bespoke Afghan Citizens’ Resettlement Scheme which reflects our enduring commitment to the Afghan people and our support for their fundamental human rights.

“It will welcome up to 20,000 people forced to flee Afghanistan; prioritise women, girls, children and others most in need, and save lives.

Wiltshire Council has offered to help rehouse two families displaced by the crisis in Afghanistan.

Thousands of people, including women and children, are hoping to be evacuated from Kabul Airport by armed forces from the UK, USA and other European countries.
