When eight-year-old Chris Tyler was exploring the history of the C&T Harris bacon factory, he did not imagine that he would soon meet two direct descendants of the Harris family.

Chris, from from Heddington, had been researching the factory as part of his year three class project at St Margaret’s School in Calne,

His class had been tasked with making models and drawings of the factory and Chris, with a little help from his family, made an excellent cardboard model.

When his mother Lucy could not find a suitable place to display it at home, she decided it was too good to put in the recycling and offered it to Calne Heritage Centre.

The centre’s Curator, Sue Boddington was very happy to accept it and arranged for Chris, who had found the history of the factory very interesting, to meet David and Peter Harris, the great-great- grandsons of Charles Harris.

Charles, along with his brother Thomas is commemorated in the initials that form the name of the firm.

David Harris is a trustee and enthusiastic supporter of Calne Heritage Centre. Both he and his brother Peter congratulated Chris on the accuracy of his model and David said how pleased he was that young people were being given the opportunity to learn about the important part the Harris family played in the economic and social development of Calne.

The model is on display at the Centre which is open to the public Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm.
