FIRE crews from eight towns are currently dealing with a huge fire that has completely destroyed the social centre club in Bromham as well as The Owl community pub next door.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 10.04am and says firefighters are using main jets and hose reels to extinguish the major fire.

Crews from Melksham, Devizes, Calne, Trowbridge and Westbury, together with an aerial appliance from Swindon and water carriers from Pewsey and Royal Wootton Bassett, are at the scene.

They are battling against low water pressure in the village to extinguish the fire in the single storey building in New Road, Bromham.

It is understood the fire started during flat roof repairs which ignited a bird's nest.

The building was quickly enveloped in flames which fire crews were unable to put out in time to save the facility.

Rosalind Humphries, clerk to Bromham Parish Council, which owns the club, says the building has been "completely destroyed" in the blaze.

It has also destroyed The Owl community pub next door, and the flat above the village pub.

She added: "We believe that a bird's nest caught fire during some flat roof repairs. The fire crews were unable to put the fire out because of the poor water pressure.

"It is a major fire I have idea of how much it will cost to replace. I haven't yet looked at the insurance policy."
