The A36 through the centre of town will close overnight from tonight (Monday, May 17).

Essential surfacing works will be carried out from St Paul's roundabout to Bourne Way roundabout.

They are scheduled to take place Monday to Friday between 8pm and 6am for the next two months.

Highways England say they will try to keep noise levels "to a minimum", but add: "Due to the nature of the work, residents should expect to hear some noise from the essential works. We apologise in advance for any disturbance caused."

Highways England also say that the new surface will be a "low noise surface, and is quieter than the existing surface that it is replacing".

Dates of work

The work will start on the evening of Monday, May 17, and finish on the morning of Wednesday, July 14.

Work will take place overnight between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday. No work will take place on Saturday or Sunday nights.

It will be carried out in phases under full road closures, and a fully signed diversion route will be in place.

Monday, May 17 to Friday, May 21: Southbound closure between St Paul's and Castle roundabouts

Monday, May 24 and Tuesday, May 25: Southbound and northbound closures between St Paul's and Castle roundabouts

May 26 and May 27: Northbound closure between Castle and St Paul's roundabouts

Tuesday, June 1: Southbound closure between Castle and St Mark's roundabouts

June 2: Northbound closure between Castle and St Mark's roundabouts

June 3: Southbound closure between Castle and St Mark's roundabouts

June 4 to June 8: Southbound and northbound closure between Castle and St Mark's roundabouts

June 9 to June 15: Full closure between Castle and College roundabouts including St Mark's roundabout

June 16 to June 22: Southbound closure from St Mark's to College roundabout

June 23 to July 1: Northbound closure from College to St Mark's roundabouts

July 2 and July 5: Full closure of College roundabout. Closure points at St Mark's roundabout, Exeter Street roundabout and Tollgate Road.

July 6 to July 13: Southbound and northbound closure between College and Bourne Way roundabouts.
