Scammers trying to defraud elderly people out of money are operating in Chippenham.

Police are warning people to be alert to phone calls from men posing as police officers and requesting bank details.

The "officer" is reported as saying they have arrested a man, who they believe is the a carer of the person being called, have him in custody, and that they have been caught with a large amount of cash on them.

They then asked questions about bank details.

Police say officers and banks will never cold call residents in this way and ask for card or bank details.

Also, police officers will not ask you to pay fines over the phone, and will not ask you to transfer money or cards.

They advise if calls of this nature are received then hang up immediately.
