A major response was underway in Collingbourne Ducis last night after a fire broke out in the roof of a thatched cottage.
Buses were diverted and, across social media, Good Samaritans were thanked for giving lifts to those who couldn't get home.
The A338 through the village, which is on the Salisbury Plain and around 10 miles south of Marlborough, was closed overnight as a result of the fire.
Local residents were told to keep their doors and windows closed and 18 engines were on scene to tackle the blaze.
Firefighters from across the region were called, as well as an incident command unit from Devizes and special engines from the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
More to follow.
