In little over weeks voters across England are set to have their voices heard in the May local elections.

Nearly 250 candidates will fight over the 98 seats up for grabs with the current majority party (Conservatives) fielding candidates in every ward.

Those candidates represent six unique political parties: Conservatives, Labour, Labour & Co-operative, Liberal Democrats, the Greens party, UKIP and the For Britain Movement.

As it stands there are also 31 independent candidates running for unitary positions – in some areas such as Melksham East, independents are running against one another.

In the current makeup of the council, the Conservative party holds a majority (62) seats.

Currently the make-up of the council is:

  • 62 Conservatives
  • 21 Liberal Democrats
  • 11 Independent
  • 3 Labour
  • 1 vacant seat (By-brook which was previously held by Baroness Jane Scott of the Conservative party)

*The By-brook by-election was due to take place last year but was postponed because of the pandemic.
