An 80th birthday whip round instead of presents raised £460 and enough to plant 55 trees in All Cannings.

Belinda Mead had asked for donations from family and friends towards planting trees in the village.

Most of them were dug into in a field belonging to Charles Butcher and sons which runs parallel with the canal by Woodway bridge.

The trees were requested by the Butcher family in memory of all the elms that stood in the village until they had to be removed when elm disease struck in the early 70's.

"A wonderful team of volunteers came along to help on a chilly winter's day and made the task pretty effortless, helped also by Mr Butcher having made holes with his JCB digger prior to planting day," said Belinda.

"The really good news is that all the trees are showing signs of having taken. Hopefully, in years to come, All Cannings will again enjoy the magnificent sight of elm trees offering joy and pleasure to future generations."
