Marlborough has certainly punched above its weight in attracting some of the top musicians in the World.

Over the past 15 years, they have made the trip to the quiet Wiltshire market town - and played exclusive and intimate gigs.

Global super star Ed Sheeran was less well known on his first trip to the town in 2011. Here is a video of  him performing in Hughenden Yard.

These days he packs out stadia.

Sound Knowledge has regular promotional appearances from artists – they play a selection of tunes in the bar at the top of the arcade, sign CDs and talk about their music. Visitors have included Gabrielle Aplin, Tom Odell , Nick Harper, Turin Brakes, Scouting for Girls, Newton Faulkner and Seth Lakeman.

The store opened in 1995 and established a name for tenacity in tracking down and obtaining almost any recording.

But the tour stops were totally unexpected. It was to owner Roger Mortimer's surprise that the first act invited to play attracted a crowd.

"It was Longview - they toured with Coldplay. They were a bit hungover, and I thought it was going to be a disaster," he said. But a crowd gathered, and we could then see the potential."

Fifteen years later, the Marlborough independent is now a firm part of the promotional tour map.

"I'm reluctant to pick a favourite act from them all as they have all been outstanding. We are very lucky to have them here."

The stars often spend extra time in the area. Tom Odell performed at Marlborough College, and Newton Faulkner went to visit pupils at Hardenhuish School in Chippenham.

Next to visit is Tom Grennan who will be coming in October this year.

Sound Knowledge has a special significance for Tom - it's where he completed his Guinness world record for the most gigs in different towns - ten in one day, back in 2018 on the day he released his debut album Lighting Matches.

Other acts who have been to visit include McFly and Louis Tomlinson from One Direction, launching his solo career, and prompting hundreds of fans to queue around the block to see him.
