Schools across the world got creative to celebrate World Book Day this year.

At Devizes School, activities were organised to help the students have fun away from their screens.

They were challenged to recreate a book cover, create a piece of art linked to their favourite novel, pose in the strangest reading location they could find and, on Thursday, design their very own book token. Throughout the week classes were also encouraged to bake to a book theme.

Rebecca Robinson, deputy head of English for key stage 3 at Devizes School, said: "The pupils have sat in their online lessons for so long now, and been brilliant, so we wanted to give them time away their screens to have fun, especially the week before they returned to school.

"So we came up with the plan to have a different creative and fun task to complete each day.

"We had some really superb entries. We had gymnasts send in pictures of them reading while doing the splits, reading from inside a bin - all sorts!

"The response has been amazing from the pupils, we were all really impressed. They really engaged and had some fun with it."

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

As children begin their phased return to school next week (March 8) staff are excited to begin in-person teaching, but won't forget the lessons learned from the last year.

Mrs Robinson added: "Live teaching and remote teaching has come with lots of challenges, but we've learned so much in such a short space of time. I think it has given us a new pathway for teaching.

"For moving forward, it has changed the way we will teach forever."

World Book Day is a charity funded by publishers and booksellers in the UK and Ireland.
