Devizes has been ranked the number one country location by the London Economic.

The market town beat the likes of Inverness-shire, Poole and Colchester to take the first place spot.

The London Economic described Devizes as "the West Country’s best kept secret" and praised the proximity of good walks, the variety of independent shops and connections made through the Kennet & Avon canal.

The article states: "There are too many great independents to mention, but there is a local guide to the independent shops. Roses the butcher is a particular treat, as is the hardware store by the same name.

"Wander down the main streets and you’ll discover scores more unique independent shops that have all but disappeared in other towns around the country."

Devizes was also praised for its proximity to Bath, Swindon and Salisbury and described as having a "remote feel" due to the lack of major trunk roads nearby.

The article also highlights the funding for a Devizes Gateway station which will improve transport links.

London Economic based their winners on several quality of life factors such as proximity to open countryside, the range of local amenities, affordability and accessibility.

Shortlisted towns and cities were then judged against a range of criteria by a panel of judges.

Devizes was ranked:

Affordability: 4

Access: 4

Amenities: 5

Countryside: 5

Best for: Independent shops and big skies.

Not so good: No train station (yet). It’s also a shame the 11th century castle is private property.

Back in 2017, Devizes was named as one of the best places to live in the Hot Housing Index put together by CACI.

Beaten only by Edinburgh, Crewe and Harrogate, the market town was described as a desirable location to live based on house prices.
