Surge testing will not be implemented in Wiltshire it was confirmed this week.

This newer programme of testing, which began on February 1 and includes door to door testing in some areas, is designed to enhance contact tracing.

It involves testing of people who are asymptomatic so that scientists can better understand new Covid-19 variants and how they compare with other cases.

It was confirmed that surge testing will not be implemented in Wiltshire, however, plans in place should the need arise.

The director for public health in Wiltshire, Kate Blackburn said: "I know this has been in the news with certain areas having to do surge testing – where variants of concern have been identified."

Currently, according to the public health chief, non of the new "variants of concern" have been found in Wiltshire.

"Surge testing does need to be implemented at place and often with very little notice. So, there would be some tricky logistics," Mrs Blackburn added.

"We have worked hard to ensure we have a plan in place for Wiltshire should it be required."
