THE family of missing Trowbridge man Ben Garland are still waiting to hear if one of two bodies found on the Spanish island of Ibiza is his, hoping that at last their long wait to mourn him fully is over.

Mark Garland and his three other children Charlotte, 37, Leanne, 35, and Jake, 23, are anxiously awaiting the results of DNA identification.

They were found last year but Spanish police have still not been able to confirm their identities because they are badly decomposed.

Mr Garland said: “They said it could take up to a month to identify them. We are not going to build up our hopes but I have got a strange feeling that this time it could be Ben.”

The bodies were discovered near Portinax, where Ben went missing on January 21 last year. British consular authorities in Spain say they will only contact Mr Garland if Ben is positively identified.

The 24-year-old, who worked on a luxury yacht, had gone to the north coast of Ibiza to video waves in the aftermath of Storm Gloria. His watch and jacket were found on the rocks but his body has yet to be found.

Hundreds of people joined the Garland family and Ben's partner Kirsten Dillon, who comes from New Zealand, in an online candlelit vigil in his memory last Thursday, the first anniversary of his disappearance.

Mr Garland, 55, of Frome Road, Trowbridge, now just wants to find Ben so he can bring his body home for burial.

He said: “I know that Ben is no longer with us. For me it’s about keeping Ben’s name out there and keeping his memory alive.

“The only thing that has helped me through has been all the messages of support and the love shown from family, friends and complete strangers.”

“I have received messages of support from people across the world, including Chicago and New Zealand. People across the globe have reached out to me, and people locally, and that has helped to keep me going.”
