Savernake Forest's 4,500 acres will be shut to the Public on Monday January 4th.

The Earl of Cardigan told the Wiltshire Gazette & Herald: "To preserve the private status of the Grand Avenue - the longest Avenue in Britain, which runs right through the middle of the Forest - we have to shut it for one day a year, this year on January 4. All cars - bar delivery vehicles - will be unable to drive into the Forest. Cars will be able to park just outside the manned barriers, and people can then walk into the Forest. Indeed many say that it is one of the best days to walk in the Forest, with the Forest standing silent without any car noise, and of course children and dogs can roam freely and very safely in the absence of vehicles.
