The Palace Cinema in Devizes could reopen by spring after months of refurbishment work after a new cash boost.

It is undergoing a major restoration process, meaning the limited films of the last nine months have not been shown on its big screen.

This week, more than 200 independent cinemas across England were supported with £16 million in grants from the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund.

In the south west, independent cinemas including the Palace Cinema have been handed a share of £126,458.

Adam Cunard, owner of Bognor-based Picturedrome which runs the Palace, said the funding was essential for the venue's survival.

He said: “I’m delighted to receive the funding. We’re doing work at the Palace otherwise it would be open with part time hours. It’s been a horrendous year for cinemas because we’ve had nothing to show – we’ve never been in this situation before.

“This funding means we can survive. We’ve always run a tight company but we’ve had to take loans out this year, so this funding means we can tick over and not close the whole company.”

Mr Cunard added: “The Palace will stay closed in the short term and hopefully reopen in spring. It’s being restored to its original decor and hopefully people walking past can already see the difference we’ve made. It’s a massive investment and will be stunning once it opens.”

MP for Devizes Danny Kruger said: “Keeping our independent cinema open in Devizes gives a much-needed boost to the town’s evening economy and arts scene, as well as keeping film-lovers spending money locally, rather than travelling further afield to visit the cinema.

“I am delighted that independent cinemas across the country, including the Palace Cinema have received support from the government. This will be vital for these venues through Christmas and beyond.”
