Wiltshire Council opposition leader Ian Thorn is calling for Wiltshire to be placed in the lowest Covid tier post-lockdown.

In a letter to Wiltshire Council Leader, Philip Whitehead, he says: "Wiltshire's hospitality, tourism and retailers have all taken a big hit due to the delayed second‎ lowdown.

“They now need and deserve all the help they can get as they reopen for the vital Christmas trading period."

"Wiltshire was among those with the lowest level of Covid infections before lockdown.

“Thanks to the responsible actions of local residents, our infection rise in recent weeks, while very regrettable, has also been low. This makes our county one of the safest Covid areas

Cllr Thorn said: “This hard work makes it absolutely essential that our local businesses can reopen and trade with the lowest level of restrictions needed to keep themselves, their staff and customers safe‎.

He added that the coming month's Christmas trade is vital to the survival of many small businesses.

“Please take all actions to ensure that the government recognise the sacrifices made by Wiltshire residents and business owners, and enables them and our County to reopen for business in Tier One."

Tier One would see Wiltshire pubs and restaurants being able to open again with last orders changed to 10pm to close at 11pm.

The end of lockdown will also see the return of spectator sports in tiers one and two with limited attendance.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed that all shops and gyms will reopen after lockdown ends on Wednesday, December 2.

The PM apologised saying that more areas than before will fall into Covid tiers with tougher restrictions.

The PM added the government hopes a list of the areas in each tier will be ready later this week.
