Marlborough residents trying to make a case for safer pedestrian passage across the top of Port Hill have handed a petition calling for action to the Town Council - and won their support.

Hannah Cartwright started a petition having got "fed up" with the speed of cars coming around the corner from the A346.

Whilst the Town Council has no powers to make decisions about Highways issues, it said it will be supporting improved provision for pedestrians at this location.

"There are a number of problems around traffic in Marlborough such as speeding, HGVs coming through the town when there are alternative routes, etc, and what’s really needed is a town wide transport and traffic strategy," said a council spokesperson.

"We will be working with Wiltshire Council to look at funding options for this."

Councillors at the full council meeting on Monday supported the petition for a safer crossing point, whether a pedestrian crossing, reduction in the speed limit or by other means.

But it said it needs a pedestrian count and to look in to alternative Wiltshire Council funding options to conduct a whole town transport strategy.

Hannah collected more than 100 handwritten statements from who claim to have experienced a ‘close call’ on the crossing. Nearly 400 people have signed the petition.

The action has caught the eye and garnered the support of other groups in the area vying for more traffic measures.

Peter Morgan, Chair of Preshute Parish Council organised the Manton Residents' Association traffic group campaign.

"We did our own manual traffic count at Manton," he said. "The traffic data was shocking.

Over a 7 day period he said there was a peak volume of over 1200 vehicles per hour in the morning rush hour. And most of that goes through the High St.
