St John's Marlborough is the latest school in Wiltshire to be hit by a coronavirus scare.

On Tuesday evening, the school published a Tweet that informed parents the school would be closed due to one isolated positive coronavirus case.

The tweet read: "Due to an isolated positive Covid case just confirmed by NHS Test & Trace, St John’s will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday October 21.

"Parents will be contacted by email and text message this evening and relevant students will be contacted with further information on Wednesday."

oday, a spokeswoman said: "Further to our announcement last night that St John’s would be closed to students on Wednesday October 21, we can now confirm that St John’s Marlborough has had one staff member test positive for COVID-19, receiving the results yesterday.

"Principal Mr Ian Tucker decided to close the school while completing the risk assessment as a precautionary measure.

"St John’s and Wiltshire's Public Health team have reviewed all the school’s procedures and are confident that no close contacts have been identified at the school, so no additional staff or students are required to self-isolate.

In the South West, there were over 493 cases per 100,000 of population - for the whole of the pandemic - up to October 18

This week, Public Health England echoed calls for people to take the rise in cases seriously.

Professor Debra Lapthorne, regional director of public health, and Mike Wade, deputy director of health protection at Public Health England South West said: "In our fight against Covid-19, we are at a crucial point which is similar to where we were in March.

Earlier in the year we were fighting a semi-invisible disease, about which we had little knowledge, and it seeded in the community at great speed. We now know where it is and how to tackle it – let’s all grasp this opportunity and prevent history from repeating itself.
