CHIPPENHAM Men’s Shed is currently trying to raise funds to finance a new workshop and base.

The group has been given a plot of land next to the cricket pavilion at the Chippenham Rugby Club.

Now they are in the process of applying for planning permission to erect a permanent, wood clad workshop where they can 'make and break things.'

The group have had to leave their old base at the sailing club and hope lottery cash will be forthcoming to help them create a new home where they will be able to carry out repairs and light manufacturing such as wooden items and garden raised beds..

"We also have a plot at the Cricketts Lane Allotment which we are in the process of developing for our disabled friends in the

community with the help of the Allotment Association and local Authorities where members can relax in a fresh air environment and grow a selection of vegetables and flowers if they wish," said trustee Jeff Gibbons.

Men’s Shed Clubs exist to reduce social isolation and provide friendship when a person retires, is bereaved, divorced, or just living alone.

They say Sheds are not exclusively for men, women are welcome too, but sheds tend to appeal more to older retired men who like to express themselves in a more manly environment.

Member Hubert Dias says he has made many friends."I am a musician and like to make and fix guitars," he said. "It's been great to get to know other musicians who come along. We have all sorts of different people. We even have a former chef who brings scones and cakes along! It's a good way for people to socialise, as we have work benches and can fix things."

The club says that following the Corona shutdown its membership has faltered, and is actively recruiting for new members. For more information about the local Shed, contact theguys@chippenhammensshed.com.
