Councillors in Trowbridge have done a U-turn and voted 8-1 to provide public toilets in or near the People's Park.

The change comes a year after the toilet block on the edge of the park was first closed, then demolished.

This week the council’s policy and resources committee has decided to replace the loos with one of four options, including toilets in a new pavilion.

The other choices are plans for a short-term public toilet in the Civic Centre, which could be reached from an outside door near to the main Avenue entrance; persuading commercial businesses to support a community toilet scheme, and using Future High Street Fund cash to signpost people to other public toilets in the town centre.

Resident Paul Jubbie strongly criticised councillors on Tuesday for reviving options they had voted against a year ago when the old town park toilets were demolished.

He said: “While I appreciate all of these recommendations, they have already happened in the past.

“I don’t understand why you are recommending things that were voted down in the past. It seems very bizarre and strange.”

The council could decide to work with Wiltshire Council to provide new toilets in Town Park with cash from the Future High Street Fund as part of a proposed multi-purpose pavilion next to the tennis courts.

The pavilion would provide a replacement bowls club HQ, changing room and a refreshment kiosk.

The committee’s recommendation says this is better than providing new public toilets in a redeveloped Castle Place.
