Wiltshire Council is encouraging shops and businesses to use the public space outside their premises not only for social distancing queuing, but to attract more customers.

Temporary pavement licences allow cafes, restaurants and pubs to use the pavements outside their business for tables and chairs for customers to use, while remaining socially-distanced.

But the authority is reminding people of the importance of observing social distancing rules while out and about socialising to ensure the spread of the virus remains low in Wiltshire.

It says people should carry a face mask with you, remember to wash hands regularly and if there are any symptoms then make sure you self-isolate for at least 10 days and get tested straight away.

By providing details through test and trace people will be able to be contacted easily if there is a need.

Leader of Wiltshire Council Philip Whitehead said: “As many people are continuing to choose to stay at home for their vacations, our high street shops and businesses are playing an important role in creating a great local experience.

“People want to get back to doing the things they enjoy, and businesses want to look at things they can do to boost their trade and encourage their customers to return not just over the summer but in the longer term too. We are doing our bit by offering support and advice that enables activities to be carried out in a safe way and reduce the spread of coronavirus.”

Temporary pavement licences are available free of charge and will, in most cases, last for 12 months from date of issue. Businesses can find out more information and apply at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/licences-permits-temporary-pavement-licences
