MORE than 2,000 people visited Cinema Retrow at Innox Mills in Trowbridge last weekend to see 11 popular feature films spread over three days from Friday to Sunday.

They were shown on a giant 60 square metre screen next to the Trowbridge Railway Station.

Many of the film-goers were local, but some visitors came from as far afield as Bristol, Winchester, Swindon and London.

Making the most of the weather, film fans arrived in vehicles of all shapes and sizes, from convertibles to classic cars and camper vans.

Mum Gemma Towler, from Trowbridge, took along her three children, Elodie, 12, Alba, seven, and Emmy, five, as well as her mother Sue Oliver, 62, from Southwick, to watch Disney classic Coco on Friday afternoon.

Mrs Towler, 38, said: “I have never been to a drive-in movie before. This will be my first time. I think it’s a very good. I only booked yesterday. It’s nice to go out and feel safe as well."

Jonathan Dean, owner of the Innox Mills site, said: “We were so pleased that our Cinema Retrow drive-in events were such a success.

“We’ve had some wonderful feedback from people complimenting our friendly security and steward team and saying what a fun idea it was to have their food delivered by roller skating waiters and waitresses.

“They also commented on how safe they felt at the event thanks to the social distancing and health and safety measures we had taken.

"Drive-in cinemas are popping up around the country this summer and their popularity shows that people want to take part in big events, but are concerned about social distancing, so watching great films on the big screen from the comfort and safety of your own car is really appealing.

“Cinema Retrow is a taster of things to come at Innox Mills and we hope to eventually open a permanent, independent cinema here.

“We want to create a vibrant new quarter that will encourage people to spend the day in Trowbridge and help show off the town as a great place to live, work and visit.”

Other families flocking to take advantage of the big screen experience on Saturday included local postman Cesar Mosquera and his friend Sam Wilkie, together with their children Molly Mosquera and Alma-Ayre and Thula Wilkie.

The pair had come in two cars to enjoy the 1994 Disney classic Lion King on the supersized LED screen, with sound broadcast via hi-tech in-car speakers which were handed to patrons as they entered.

Two Platinum VIP competition winners, Samantha and Ollie from Bath, enjoyed Saturday night’s screening of Joker snuggled up under the stars in the back of a SsangYong Rhino, the UK’s largest pick-up truck, complete with bubbly, sweets and popcorn.

As it was over 30 degrees on all three days, visitors were allowed to sit outside their car on the left-hand side to allow for social distancing, which added a fun, summer picnic feel to the drive-in cinema experience.

A number of film fans brought along props and toys to reflect their film’s theme.

A family of young Lion King fans shared their picnic rug with a small pride of cuddly Simba lion toys, while Elliot Turner, from Trowbridge, arrived in his convertible dressed as Elton John to watch Rocketman on Sunday.

Mr Dean added: “The digital in-car speakers produced excellent quality sound and people could be heard singing and clapping along to the films in their cars.

“The roller skating waiters and waitresses whizzed delicious freshly cooked burgers, spicy hot dogs, vegan wraps, ice cream, sweets, popcorn and chilled drinks to the cars, all ordered via an in-car smartphone app.

“It’s very satisfying being able to put on a large event in these strange times.

“I’d like to thank our event partners The Platinum Motor Group, Webcreation UK, EweMove, Most Wanted Wine and the Hills Group and our brilliant local food and drink providers Sweet Sensations from Trowbridge, Lacock Dairy Ice Cream, Kettlesmith Brewery in Bradford on Avon and JC’s Kitchen from Trowbridge."

The next event is the Innox Mills market this Sunday August 16 from 9am to 3pm, and entry is free.

There will be 50 food, drink and craft stalls, live music and freshly cooked takeaway food on offer.
