TICKETS are selling out fast for a new drive-in movie theatre in Trowbridge which is expected to attract hundreds of mums, dads, teenagers and younger children over the weekend.

Cinema Retrow, Trowbridge's first drive-in movie theatre, opened its gates today for the 1pm screening of the Disney classic Coco, to be followed by screenings of Grease at 5pm and Knives Out at 8.30pm.

The cinema, next to Trowbridge railway station and on the new Innox Mills site, formerly the Bowyers factory, has been gearing up for a jam-packed weekend of movie classics.

A giant 60 square metre LED screen has been put in place for the 11 films to be shown today, Saturday and Sunday, with an estimated 3,000 people expected to attend over the three days.

The shows kick off at 1pm today with a screening of children's Disney favourite Coco, which won two Oscars in 2017 for Best Animated Film and Best Original Song.

Mum Gemma Towler, 38, from Trowbridge, had taken along her three children, Elodie, 12, Alba, seven, and Emmy, five, as well as her mother Sue Oliver, 62, from Southwick, to watch the film.

She said: “I have never been to a drive-in movie before. This will be my first time.

“I think it’s a very good. I only booked yesterday. It’s nice to go out and feel safe as well.

“I was going to book it a couple of weeks ago and then forgot. I had a Facebook reminder and booked yesterday.

“My hubby and I are going to come back tomorrow to see Joker as a date night.”

Jonathan Dean, director of Innox Mills Ltd, which has laid on the Cinema Retrow events, said they will be the first of many designed to bring people into Trowbridge.

The drive-in cinema has a total occupancy for 80 vehicles and Mr Dean said: “We’re pricing it per car rather than per person, and have only two Premium tickets left for Grease, while Premium tickets for Back to the Future are sold out.

“Tickets are selling quite fast, particularly for Joker and Rocketman.

“We’re hoping it will change perceptions of the town and show that it can put on events. We want people to think they can spend the whole day here and make some memories.”

Films include family favourites The Lion King, How to Train Your Dragon and Moana, plus retro classics Back to the Future, Grease and Dirty Dancing and recent hits such as Rocketman, Joker and Knives Out, starring Daniel Craig as a Texan detective.

Guests can pre-order food and drink from local producers, including freshly cooked hot dogs, mega movie burgers and vegan wraps from Trowbridge's award-winning street food business JC’s Kitchen, hand-made ice-cream from Lacock Dairy, craft beer from Kettlesmith in Bradford-on-Avon and giant Retrow sweet bags by Sweet Sensations, founded by 17 year-old Trowbridge student Georgia Smith.

All the shows will have Toe-Jam waiters and waitresses attending on roller skates, just like an American drive-in experience, to serve pre-ordered food and drink, including burgers and popcorn.

Standard tickets are £20 – £35 and are priced per car, rather than per person. Premium tickets (front rows) are £27.50 – £42.50 and Platinum VIP tickets (watching films under the stars snuggled up in the back of the UK’s largest pick-up with bubbly & popcorn) are £70 for two people (only five tickets available).
