Sixth former Owen Vincent was so determined to do his bit for key workers during the coronarus pandemic he accidentally broke his mum’s oven.

The 17-year-old from Tadpole Garden Village made 300 chocolate brownies them after his fundraising effort for a volunteering expedition this summer was put back to next year.

Owen, who goes to Swindon Academy’s sixth form said: “Two classmates and I were raising money for our volunteer trip to Kenya.

“Obviously that stopped because of lockdown but we still needed some way to fundraise.

“So I started making the brownies at home and sold them to the neighbours and it seemed to be going really well.”

Owen’s trip to Kenya was supposed to take place this July but the lockdown means the expedition has been pushed to next year.

But after seeing how well the brownies were selling he decided to carry on as a way of giving back to the community during the current crisis.

He explained: “We were making a lot of money towards our fundraising and the brownies were doing well

“I was sure there are plenty of people out there who would happily receive them for free.

“We thought why not set ourselves a target of 300 and donate them to local key workers?”

Owen ended up donating 300 of them to key workers working at the Great Western Hospital as well as Boots in Cirencester.

And he’s carrying on with his baking.

“Ever since then we’ve been donating some more every couple of weeks,” He said: “They’ve been doing quite well.

“Everything baked for the workers was paid for out of our own pockets.”

And to make sure that people felt safe receiving Owen’s brownies, he went and got a Level 2 Hygiene and Safety qualification as well as offering contactless delivery and wearing PPE throughout the baking process.

But the days of baking eventually took its toll on his mum Sally’s oven.

Owen explained: “My family enjoyed that I was still doing things in lockdown but on the other side I did break my mum’s oven through doing it, so she wasn’t happen about that.

“The oven was on all day every day for two weeks so I don’t think it could cope.

But he added: “I still make the brownies whenever people want them.”
