Memories came flooding back for Adver readers over the weekend as we took a stroll down the high street of old.

In a story on our website, we took a look at stores from the 90s that shoppers can no longer visit and readers were asked to chip in with their own memories of those they miss.

One of Britain’s most quintessential high street stores was Woolworths.

Children used to run in after school to grab a bag of pick 'n' mix while tasting the odd one as they went. Lovingly known as ‘Woolies', no back-to-school shop was complete without stopping into the store.

The Regent Street branch closed its doors in 2008 as the company went into administration.

Before the likes of Netflix and TV on-demand, Blockbuster at the Orbital Shopping Park was the place to go to choose a Friday night film and some snacks. The company went into administration in 2013.

The old Toys R Us site near the White Hart roundabout was sold last year after being a favourite with children in the town for decades.

Here are some of the suggestions and memories our readers shared:

Graham Seager: “C&A, Woolworths, McIlroys. Town is not the same as it was when I was younger.

“It was so much better then. I remember the record shop by Superdrug. I don’t see a good future for the town centre, shame.

Lewis Burberry: “Devon Savouries. Their curry slices were the best. Beats Greggs.”

Lin Wilson: “Woolworths. Could get practically everything under one roof.

“We loved the broken biscuit counter and pick ‘n’ mix and loved the Ladybird clothing range for my kids when they were little.”

Helen Von Steuben: “McIlroys, British Home Stores, Woolworths, Littlewoods, Trents, C&A, the second-hand book shops.

“So many excellent shops have gone.”

Anthony Vines: “McIlroys, please turn back time and reopen.

“Loved the staircases – no modern lifts here.”

Sharon Johnson: “Woolworths, definitely. It was a shop you could get almost everything in.”

Angela Godden: “Woolworths and Toys R Us as that’s where I used to work and I loved my job”

Marion Lane: “Remember Bejam, I worked in Gray’s next door and often popped in for ice cream during tea breaks”

Anne Wilson: “I miss Woolworths. It was a brilliant shop.”

Chris Hedges: “I miss Toys R Us like losing a girlfriend. It was my childhood back in the 90s.”

Wendy Hill: “I miss Woolies.”

Bru Ce: “I miss Our Price (and all music shops), Woolies, Sumo (when it was underneath the Brunel) C&A, Brunel Market and the black and white flooring in The Parade.”

Jenny Brogan: “Woolworths was a great shop. Everything under one roof and I loved the pick 'n' mix .”

Rachael Cordy: “Blockbuster. I used to love browsing the rubbish that went straight to video.”

Lorenzo Gomez: “Borders. I loved that shop. Used to spend hours browsing and always came out with a new album, DVD, book or magazine.”

Richard Mrowczynski: “Beatties the toy and model shop. It was the best model shop in town. Nothing even comes close now.”

Will Roberts: “Normans in the town centre, also Wymans, C&A, Fosters and so many more, especially all the small gents outfitters.”
