A police investigation into reports that a man “tried to snatch” a child from a play area in Royal Wootton Bassett continues, Wiltshire Police has said.

Police were called on Sunday after a woman, 20s, said a man had approached her two-year-old daughter in the park near Cloatley Crescent and Churn Way at around 11.30am and allegedly tried to leave the play area with her.

The woman was said to have grabbed her daughter. The man walked away.

A Wiltshire Police spokeswoman said: “Officers have been conducting extensive enquiries in all nearby streets surrounding the park following the incident. This includes addresses in Churn Way, Daisy Brook and Buttermilk Crescent.”

CCTV was also being examined. Forensics enquiries are ongoing.

No arrests have been made.

On Monday, Swindon CID’s Det Insp Paul Hacker asked for anyone in the park at the time to come forward.

"Understandably, this incident has caused anxiety and upset to those involved and no doubt this news will cause further concern amongst the local community - at this stage of our investigation we are keeping an open mind as to what the man's intentions may have been,” he said.

“It is possible that there may be an innocent explanation to this and if that is the case, we would still like to speak to the man involved to understand exactly what this was.

“Rest assured we are leaving no stone unturned in our enquiries to identify him.”
The suspect is described as tanned, 30-40 years of age, around 5 ft 11 inches tall and of average build. He was wearing a polo shirt and long shorts.
