Thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes were stolen from a supermarket delivery lorry in Calne.

Police are appealing for help to trace the gang who got away with £12,500 of cigarettes in a carefully planned operation.

They struck first while the Tesco lorry was parked in a layby in Derry Hill at about 6.20am on July 16.

A police spokesman said: "It is thought that one of the male suspects may have gained access to the lorry while it was parked in the layby while the driver took a break.

"When the van was later parked on the loading bay of the Tesco Supermarket in Harrier Close in Calne at about 7am, possibly two other offenders may have helped unload the cigarettes into another vehicle before making off.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time to try to recall if they noticed anything suspicious. We are particularly keen for any dashcam footage recorded by anyone who may have been near the layby at Derry Hill or the Tesco store in Calne at the time.

"Anyone with information should call 101 quoting crime reference number 54200069752.

"Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to report anonymously."
