It has felt like a long time since pubs pulled their last pint but today, after more than three months, pubs were able to reopen.

Reporter Connor Mountford went to The Runner pub on Wootton Bassett Road to see how the pub has adapted to social distancing life and how the atmosphere has changed.

There was a sense of caution as I entered the pub. There were social distancing markers on the carpet in front of me as well as a hand sanitiser station on the wall, which I was instructed to use before moving further into the building.

After I'd lathered my hands in the disinfectant I was greeted by landlady Jayne Tilsley who took my name and details (for track and trace purposes) before showing me to my table.

It wasn't busy. When I arrived there were only four other people but more people eventually showed up, but I still didn't feel like it was unsafe.

The tables were spaced apart and Jayne walked me through the process of ordering food.

Usually I would have to scan a QR code on the back of my disposable menu or table number, but unfortunately it wasn't working - typical.

Instead Tracey took my order with a traditional pen and paper, while staying two metres apart before running it to the bar and kitchen.

My food and drink were brought over to me on a tray where I then had to take it off said tray to avoid contact.

My sauces, including salt, were brought in sachets in order to stop people using the same bottles and shakers.

During my meal, Jayne told me after a customer leaves the whole table will be decontaminated.

The chair and table will be wiped clean with disinfectant to try and prevent the spread of any germs.

As I took in the atmosphere, there was a weird sense of unity. As if you could talk to anyone in the building and not be judged.

This was the case a few tables over, where a younger man had leaned over to speak to some older gentlemen on a table over.

Despite the age difference, there was a sense that they were on the same wavelength and could talk about anything.

And that might be the case across the UK today, as people come out of their homes for potentially the first time in three months and start to socialise again.

The whole country has been through this crisis and that's now something that brings us all together.

Landlords across the country will be hoping that a second peak doesn’t come around and with the measures in place, pubs are definitely trying their best to put that on hold.
