A Nissan driver was caught drink driving twice in almost as many months.

Manjit Multani, 40, was on bail when he was stopped behind the wheel of his Qashqai on the A350 near Trowbridge on June 19 at around 7.30pm.

Police officers found a number of open containers of alcohol in the car. When he was taken back to the police station he blew 42. The legal limit is 35.

Two months earlier, on April 5, he was stopped in the same car – also along the A350, although this time near Yarnbrook. A breathalyser found he had 50 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Defending, Mark Glendenning said his client had had a problem with alcohol abuse for some time. He had been trying to address the issue but the death of a friend in March had left him struggling to cope. He suffers from depression.

Multani, of Bailbrook Lane, Bath, pleaded guilty to two counts of drink driving and accepted he had breached the terms of an earlier community order by failing to attend probation appointments in March. Magistrates sentenced him to a 12 month community order with 15 rehabilitation days, banned him from driving for 16 months and ordered he pay a £95 victim surcharge.
