MARLBOROUGH’S post office will re-open on Monday, after being closed throughout lockdown.
The intention is that it will be running a full service from Monday to Friday, 9.30am-5.30pm and Saturdays 9.30am-12.30pm.
The town has been without a post office since lockdown, as the six staff were put on furlough.
Now more staff have been hired at the One Stop shop outlet on the High Street.
Customers were being redirected to smaller village post offices outside Marlborough, with frustrated locals demanding to know why a town the size of Marlborough should be without the facility.
MP Danny Kruger waded into the row this week, adding to pressure to get the service re-opened. “Throughout the lockdown a real issue for people in Marlborough has been the closure of the Post Office,” he said.
“This has made life harder for people who can’t drive to other towns, especially the elderly, including those who receive their pensions in cash from the Post Office.
“We know there were often sudden closures – because of staffing problems – before the lockdown, and we can’t be confident it won’t happen again.
“I spoke this week to a senior director at the Post Office nationally to discuss the role the network can and should play in the future.
“We urgently need a more stable service in our local Post Offices to make local communities stronger and more resilient.“
