PAST and present members of All Saints Church Westbury helped to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its First Steps to Worship Toddler Service.

They joined a virtual Zoom teleconferencing meeting organised by Sharon Jones, the group organiser, to mark its birthday last month.

Mrs Jones, 58, of Station Road, said: "I managed to make contact with about 60 people who were members of the group.

"We had about 30 past and present members join in with our celebration service."

The First Steps to Worship Toddler Service was launched by Reverend Dorothy Bellamy, a former curate at All Saints Church, in 1990 to provide friendship and support to parents, carers and children.

Sessions are now led by Mrs Jones, who has been part of the group from the first meeting and never left once her three children grew up.

In 1995, she was joined by David Hill, a licensed Lay Minister, who moved to Frome in 1997.

Mrs Jones was then joined by Jean and Peter Jane around 23 years ago, along with Hilary Price.

Mrs Jones said: "There have also been others from the Mother’s Union who helped with the refreshments over the years.

"Peter joined the group when he retired from teaching in Trowbridge and plays his guitar each week to accompany the singing.

"Jean also helps lead the group and organises the rota of refreshment helpers.

"The format is still exactly the same as it was 30 years ago, a Bible story followed by singing and musical instruments, a short prayer then racing round the church and refreshments for half an hour."

The First Steps to Worship sessions are held every Wednesday morning in term time from 9.30am to 10.30am in the church.

Mrs Jones added: "Parents and carers appreciate this friendly and supportive group which continues to thrive and follow the same ethos that Dorothy Bellamy began in 1990."
