Walkers, cyclists and drivers who want to see changes made to Swindon’s roads to make things easier during lockdown should contact their councillors quickly.

The Adver reported last week that Swindon Borough Council was preparing to bid for a slice of the government’s £250m emergency walking and cycling fund.

Councillors have been sent an email by the highways works team asking for “feedback, comments and questions from all ward councillors on what you would like to see and where, in the way of traffic management, temporary road closures and one-way systems etc.”

It concluded: “Street works have a very short window to turn around plans and will need to know your thoughts within a few days.”

Labour councillor for Mannington and Western Jim Robbins says his party is keen to see extra provision to let walkers and cyclists socially distance.

Coun Robbins said: "I'm really pleased to see the council get to grips with this work and I'm grateful to the Adver for highlighting the issue.

“I'm happy to feed in any ideas to increase the size of cycle lanes, join up existing cycle lanes, create new ones, extend pedestrian space, widen pavements to allow social distancing.

“I want Swindon to use the funding to keep residents safer during lockdown, and to kick-start a discussion on how we transform the town, and get our fair share of the additional infrastructure funding that the government has promised.”
